Every year, each cadet corp and squadron across the country has the opportunity to award two medals to deserving cadets (as long as a qualified candidate exists). The two medal that can be awarded are the Cadet Legion Medal of Excellence and the Lord Strathcona Trust Fund Medal.
The application form below must be submitted to OCdt McKinnon no later than Jan 22, 2020.
For cadets who are hoping to be awarded these medals they should review the following criteria and then fill out the appropriate posted form – please note the cadet, should they qualify, can apply for both medals.
If a qualified candidate does not exist, the medal does not get award; that being said, if the cadet is aware that they do not meet the criteria to be awarded (example the cadets does not have the total years in cadets required): they need not apply.
The criteria for the Legion Medal: Application form
The Royal Canadian Legion Cadet Medal of Excellence is awarded annually to the Cadet having shown a high degree of participation and leadership in the area of citizenship and in meeting and enhancing the aims and objectives of the Cadet Organization.
The criteria for selection of individual cadets requires that they have fulfilled the following conditions through three years of cadet training:
● have fulfilled all requirements of the corps local headquarters annual mandatory training program and participated in 75% of the optional training;
● have participated in at least three community service events, in addition to the corps supported programs;
● must be seen by peers and superiors to exemplify the model cadet and enhance his/her corps status by:
- co-operation with peers and superiors
- comradeship
- promotion of goodwill and morale within the corps
- supporting and assisting corps members
- enhancing the image of Cadets in the local community
The Criteria for the Lord Strathcona Medal: Application form
The Lord Strathcona Trust Fund Medal, most commonly referred to as the Lord Strathcona Medal is the highest award, which can be bestowed upon a cadet in recognition of exemplary performance in physical and military training.
The recipient must have a complete knowledge of the activities of the cadet movement and must meet the following requirements:
a. have a high level of physical fitness;
b. have qualified to a training level not below:
- Level 3 in the Air Cadets;
- Have met all requirements of their squadrons mandatory training program and attended at least 75 percent of the scheduled training parades in the year of nomination;
- Have met all requirements of their squadrons optional/support training program;
- Have completed three years as a cadet; and
- Be regarded by peers and supervisors as exemplifying the model cadet.
